Ugh – so I’m sick. I’m never sick. Well obviously not NEVER since I am now
But seriously, I haven’t been sick since Easter 2009. I remember. And that was just allergies. And I beat those the next year so ha!
I felt my cold come on yesterday after I coached soccer in the morning – the scratchy throat, the nose starting to get stuffy, the tiredness coming on. I made sure to go to bed early (around 10:15 – not bad for a Saturday night) and just sleep until my body woke up naturally (around 8:45 – very late for me!). I also have an arsenal of cold-fighting goodies. I don’t like to use medicine or put a bunch of drugs in my body so I’m staying away from that route. I prefer taking the more natural road. So here’s my go-to stash for colds:
Side note: Aren’t the hydragneas gorgeous? I picked them up at the grocery store on Friday for $4.99!!! I love love love fresh flowers in the house but I haven’t bought any for a long time and couldn’t resist this awesome deal. (And they just match perfectly with our newly painted kitchen – blue and white!)
But onto my cold remedy paraphernalia:
Yogi Throat Comfort Tea: I love tea and this tea not only tastes great but it does soothe a sore throat – double win! Oh and it’s organic – triple win!
Local Raw Honey: I only buy raw honey from the local orchard and health food store. It tastes amazing (I put a little in my tea), it helps coat the throat, and I believe that it helps with allergies. This is due to the bees traveling around collecting nectar from flowers that produce the same pollen that gives people allergies. So when you eat local raw honey you are actually ingesting some of that same pollen. It helps boost your immune system and reduces your allergies to the local plants. Plus you’re helping local beekeepers and businesses: A+ for you!
Although conventional processing destroys much of honey’s natural benefits, raw honey serves up a (many claim therapeutic) dose of antioxidants, minerals, vitamins, amino acids, and enzymes. (Source)
Emergen-C: I mix a packet of Emergen-C with water and it tastes like fruit juice. I also like it because it has a ton of antioxidants and vitamins – never a bad thing for when you’re sick.
And another thing that I think helps when battling a cold: having a really cute awesome mug to make your tea/honey in!
My mom and I found these at the local Christian bookstore and she bought them for me – Yay for Mom!!! The saying on the mug is “The Earth is filled with your love, O Lord. Psalm 119:64″. And it has a little owl at the bottom of the mug inside:
So there you have it. Hopefully Mr. Owl & I can combat this thing and demolish it quickly! Let me know what your favorite natural remedy is to beat colds or any other type of illness/sickness.
