Mike and I try to lead a healthy lifestyle by eating fresh, natural foods and staying active. It wasn’t until a few years ago that we expanded our healthly lifestyle into other aspects of our lives. We started to analyze everything (well mostly everything!) that we put on our bodies or that we had contact with. Surprisingly that’s a lot of other “stuff” to look at! Have you ever thought about how healthy your lotion or makeup is? It’s actually sort of scary to think about all the bad stuff we expose our bodies to.
Shockingly some makeup is bad for you. And then there’s just bad makeup.
So when you slather on lotion, apply lipstick or lather up your hair with shampoo, what do you think happens to the chemicals in the products? They get absorbed directly into your body. It is well-proven that when you apply these chemicals to your skin, they enter your bloodstream and become integrated into your body tissues, In fact, it is probably safer to eat these ingredients than to rub them on your skin (although I strongly recommend you don’t do either!). I’ve read articles stating that the average women absorbs something like 5 lbs of makeup a year! While I’m not 100% sure of the accuracy of that statistic I do believe that some makeup is absorbed into the body. This sort of grosses me out so Mike and I have begun to analyze and critique our “beauty” products. This includes everything from toothpaste to mascara (just for me, not for Mike!) to sunscreen.
I’m no scientist or chemist by any means and sometimes this process can seem a bit daunting. Have you ever tried to read the ingredients on the back of your lotion or body wash? It’s ridiculous. So to help the process I discovered an awesome little online database which analyzes the ingredients in different cosmetics. It’s called Skin Deep Cosmetics Database:
You just type in the name of your product and it gives you a healthy/unhealthy rating and a breakdown of the ingredients. It’s awesome. You definitely need to try it out!
For example, if you type in Banana Boat Sunscreen SPF 30 you can see that the overall rating is a 7 (out of 10, with 0 being the best and 10 being the worst). Not horrific, but not good by any means. If you scroll down the site does a breakdown of all the ingredients. They explain what each one does and they rate each one individually.
And how many of us have used this product? Probably a ton! I know Banana Boat is one of the most popular brands of sunscreen.
Two years ago I did a lot of research regarding sunscreen and found that two pretty popular sunscreen ingredients, Retinyl Acetate (Vitamin A) and Oxybenzone, could possibly aid in the development of cancer. Ummm…what? Wasn’t I using sunscreen to avoid cancer? Those scientists and company executives are sneaky, aren’t they? So I was determined to find sunscreens that helped block the sun AND did not contain those two ingredients. It was hard and challenging. We went to our local grocery store and camped out in the sunscreen aisle reading lotion bottle after lotion bottle. (Seriously – it definitely took us a while haha) But we finally found some good stuff: (Click on the picture to access the database results of that particular sunscreen)
Burt’s Bees Sunscreen: 4 out of 10 (Found at local grocery store in the organic aisle)
Alba Botanica Sunblock SPF 45: 6 out of 10 (Found at local grocery store in the organic aisle)
Alba Botanica Sunblock SPF 30: 2 out of 10 (Found at local grocery store in the organic aisle)
Banana Boat Natural Reflect SPF 50+: 3 out of 10 (Found at Target)
Obviously there are a lot more options out there. Some of the best ones you probably have to order from specialty stores but these four we were able to buy locally. They might be more expensive than your traditional sunscreens but remember – you are paying for the lack of chemicals, which in my opinion, is the best way to enjoy the sun!
So remember – protect your body and do your research before buying beauty products!
